Healthy Habits While Stuck at Home
Being “locked down” at home should not be an excuse to stop your healthy habits and behaviors. Sure, it’s a new chapter in your life and an unfamiliar one at that. But you can still take care of yourself and stay healthy as well as safe. Here are some tips to keep both you and your family in shape.
Think about what you’re eating
Like most, you have probably stocked up the kitchen in preparation for a quarantine. As a result, sticking with “healthy eating” and meal plans can be a challenge. Avoid being tempted by take-out foods, especially the fast-food varieties, where you will be at risk for ultra-processed foods. Stick with whole foods and colorful fruits and veggies while avoiding refined sugars as much as possible. As always, be mindful when you are eating. Ask yourself, “am I looking in the fridge because I’m hungry, or am I just bored?”
Keeping your body hydrated throughout the day helps to fight off viruses and other infections. It also boosts your metabolism and acts as an appetite suppressant. Drink a glass of water before every meal and keep a reusable water bottle handy.
Stay physically active
If you find yourself missing those workouts at the gym, you are not alone. Fortunately, there are plenty of home exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Whether it’s a brisk walk around your neighborhood or a free online workout class, you’ll feel good about your physical and mental health. Exercise mental health
While adjusting to a “locked-down lifestyle,” don’t lose sight of your physical and mental health! If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or worried, reach out to your support system. It’s likely your sister or best friend could use a pick me up call just as much as you. Tools like FaceTime and Zoom are even better- you can see the smile on their face!
Indulge- within reason!
“Lock-downs” are stressful times for all of us. So go ahead, treat yourself to a small dessert like a few pieces of dark chocolate. Do you have a favorite book you have never had the time to read? Or a Netflix series you’ve heard so much about? Perhaps now’s the time to try out a few healthy recipes. Try this low sugar margarita and treat yourself… you deserve it more than ever!
Better than the mix Margarita!
- 6 fl oz Tequila (use quality tequila)
- 1/3 cup Lime juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
- 1 tsp Liquid stevia
- 5 cup Ice cubes
- Sea salt (for salted rim)
- Lime wedges (for garnish)
Get Enough Quality SleepA lack of quality sleep can adversely affect both your physical and mental health. The amount of sleep you should be getting depends on your age. In general, adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Go to bed and get up at set times, disconnect from electronics, get the TV out of the bedroom, and limit your caffeine intake as much as you can.
No question, our lives have been completely turned upside down. But there are many things you can do to stay well, and a healthy routine will provide a sense of control during this time of uncertainty.
